Are you managing a go-getter that keeps causing problems?

employee problems

Sometimes I work with go-getters who are frustrated by being held back by the team or their manager.

They're passionate about their work.

They're smart and fast, and can get a ton done.

They judge other members of their team by their own standards.

They see what others could be doing and don't understand why they aren't.

They are de-motivating the team, when they could be inspiring.

They don't notice strengths in others that they fail to value in themselves.

They don't see that every team is stronger through a diversity of strengths and abilities.

They don't understand that marathon runners sometimes get there quicker than sprinters.

They may push themselves to burnout and negatively impact progress through manic cycles.

They have huge opportunity but sabotage their potential.

Here are some things that help:

      1. Help them gain perspective on themselves (look in the mirror) and others (theory of mind) to see the relational dynamic between them, the team, their peers, work role, and management.
      2. Invite them to start learning leadership and possibly enter onto a leadership preparation track. Leadership starts with self leadership and learning leadership will help expand their perspective. If they become better leaders in their current position their abilities will move from de-motivating to inspiring others.

Go-getters really care, and that deep caring gets in the way until they gain relational perspective. As their perspective expands it tempers their sometimes manic desire to do good.
